Washington: Hulkamania is coming to the big screen! Chris Hemsworth is set to portray wrestling legend Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic.
The film reunites Todd Phillips with Scott Silver, the respective director and writer of the upcoming DC Comics movie The Joker. John Pollono (Stronger) will co-write the script with Silver, revealed The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix has obtained the exclusive life rights and consulting services from Terry Gene Bollea AKA Hulk Hogan, reported Variety.
The producers of the film are Michael Sugar through his Sugar23’s first-look Netflix deal along with Joint Efforts’ Phillips and Bradley Cooper, Eric Bischoff, and Hemsworth. Hogan will executive produce along with Sugar23’s Ashley Zalta. Co-producers are Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman.
One of the biggest names in the world of wrestling, Hogan was a ficture in television in the 1980s as part of the World Wrestling Federation.
Terry Gene Bollea, who was popularly known as Hogan began his career in the late 1970s in the Florida wrestling circuit. When he started in the WWF, he frequently squared off against Andre the Giant as a villainous fighter. When Vince McMahon took over the company and began expanding it into a national presence, Hogan was its face and by then a hero persona.
The project is expected to deal with the formative years of Hogan’s ascent into fame, starting with the Florida wrestling circuit in the late 1970s and becoming the face of the World Wrestling Federation during the 1980s. The term “Hulkamania” was coined in 1984 with Hogan frequently referring to his fans as “Hulkamaniacs” in his interviews and encouraging them to focus on training, saying prayers, and eating vitamins.
Hemsworth is best known for portraying Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
