Cong, AAP approach EC over ‘violation’ of MCC by BJP

New Delhi: A delegation of the Congress party and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday met Election Commission officials in separate instances over the alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct by the BJP.

While Congress complained about the hoardings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, AAP complained about alleged harassment of the owner of a call centre by the Delhi Police on the “behest of BJP.” The call centre was reportedly hired by AAP to “help people whose names were allegedly stuck off the voters’ list.”

Speaking to media here, Congress leader RPN Singh said the EC has taken cognizance of the complaint filed on advertisements of Prime Minister Modi at railways stations, airports and petrol pumps.

“We had given a presentation to the Election Commission on March 10 that hoardings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are still there on petrol pumps, railway stations and airports. The EC said that it has taken cognizance of the issue and issued instructions of those hoardings being pulled down. The work is still in progress. EC clearly told us that they have asked for a report on the issue which will be submitted by Friday evening,” he said.

Meanwhile, an AAP delegation lead by Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia met EC officials urging them to ‘suspend’ three Delhi Police officials whom he accused of ‘working on behalf of BJP’

“As per BJP’s directions, names of 24 lakh voters were stuck off voter list. We launched a campaign to get their name re-registered in the voter list. Delhi Police acting on behest of BJP has been raiding the call centre with whose help we did this campaign,” Sisodia said while talking to reporters.

“Delhi police is threatening the owner of the call centre that if you work for AAP, we will make you fall in line,” Sisodia claimed.“It is the duty of the EC to conduct a fair election and protect democracy. The threatening by Delhi Police is still continuing even after MCC has come into force. The Delhi Police is acting like BJP’s goons.

We have asked that it should be stopped,” he added.

“They (call centre) are not doing something proxy. AAP has hired them. AAP has an agreement with them,” Sisodia clarified.

The BJP had earlier complained to the EC against Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct by making ‘unverified allegations’ against Prime Minister Modi.

Seven-phased elections in the country will be held from April 11 to May 19. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
