Cooks at Ajmer Sharif Dargah prepare 2,400 kg of ‘Khichdi’ every day for past 450 yrs

Ajmer: Disputing the claim that 918 kg of khichdi is the biggest meal, Syed Salman Chishty of the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, tweeted that about 2,400 kg of vegetarian sweet rice is cooked at Dargah on a daily basis.

In an event ‘The World Food India’ that held on November 4 in New Delhi, a team of 50 members cooked 918 kg of khichdi.

Chishti told Scroll.in: “It is about getting the details right and getting the message across”. According to him, he did not consider for applying to the Guinness Book of World Records. “As Sufis, we do not want to be in the limelight, but the work we do should be acknowledged,” he added.

Chishty said that about 2,400 kg of rice meal is cooked in two pots at the Dargah, with a capacity of 1,600 kg and 800 kg respectively for over the past 450 years.

About 20 traditional cooks of four families prepare the meal, he said.
