Dalit MLA Jignesh Mevani detained in Rajasthan, DCP says ‘Upar se order hai’

Jaipur: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was detained by Rajasthan police on his arrival at Jaipur airport. The Dalit leader was to travel to Nagaur for addressing a public meeting. Mevani told India Today that he was detained for ‘no reason’.

Mevani said he was going to Nagaur to speak on the Indian constitution and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. In a series of tweets, Mevani said: “For urgent attention of media: today, immediately after I landed at Jaipur airport, few cops made me sign a letter saying MLA Jignesh Mevani’s entry is restricted in entire nagor district of Rajasthan. I was going there to talk about Indian constitution and Baba Saheb Ambedkar.”

Dalit leader said when he asked the reason for his detention but was told ‘Upar se order hai’. “For the past 2 hours, I am asking the on-duty DCP of Jaipur whether he has an order to restrict my movement he has no answer. He said ‘upar se bola hai’..he took away local Dalit activist’s mobile also. As per law, this is a case of legally confining me, if not kidnapping. Shame,” he said.

“If Bhagwat was going at Nagor district of Rajasthan to talk about Manusmriti, Raje would have allowed him. But since I was supposed to talk about the philosophy of Baba Saheb Ambedkar they are restricting my movements,” tweeted Mevani.
