NEW DELHI: Minor dispute turns ugly after members of two communities clashed, pelted stones and bottle bombs were hurled at each other from both sides.
According to media reports, the incident took place at around 9.30 pm on Thursday night in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri when 18-year-old vegetable vendor Shoaib Mohammad, was passing by a park where “boys from another community,” were playing cricket allegedly assaulted Shoaib who sustained injuries on his head, back and shoulders.
“Mohammad was passing by the park and suddenly happened to have a verbal spat with one of the men playing cricket. Within minutes, the argument turned ugly as the other party started throwing bricks, stones, bottle bombs at us,” Shabnam, Mohammad’s elder sister was quoted as saying to DNA news.
Police team rushed the area, lathi-charged and used tear gas to disperse the mob to brought the situation under control.
DCP (east) Pankaj Kumar Singh said ten persons has been arrested in connection with the incident and cases under various sections of Indian Panel Code has been registered against them. Probe is on to identify the culprits who fuelled the violence.
The arrested persons are identified as Shoaib, his elder brothers Noor Mohammad, Rashid, Rahul, Ankit, Lalit, Saqib and three more men.
Family members of Shoaib alleged that the cops lathicharged them when they gheraoed the Mayur Vihar police station, an allegations DCP Singh denied.
Rashid’s eight-month pregnant wife Rukhsar (22) recallin the incident claimed: “He was home. I was serving him dinner when police came and dragged him away… they also pushed me and I fell. He wasn’t even at the scene of the fight”.
Trilokpuri is prone to communal clashes. Earlier in February, members of two groups clashed and resorted to stone pelting in which a few people, including a some police personnel were injured.
Earlier in 2016, a case of rioting had been registered after a group of men clash among themselves.
The communal lashes between Hindus and Muslims in the area in 2014, had left at least 30 people, including 13 policemen, injured.
