Deoria shelter home: UP govt removes SP

Deoria: Initiating action in the Deoria shelter home case, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday removed the district’s Superintendent of Police Rohan P. Kanay and attached him to the Director General of Police’s (DGP) office.

On August 7, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for investigation. The CBI had highlighted irregularities during 2015-16.

“The CBI had said in 2015-16 that there were financial irregularities here. When we came to power in 2017, we ordered its closure. The district administration did not act on time. So, the District Magistrate was transferred and we have decided to charge sheet him”, said the chief minister on that day while addressing a presser.

In today’s action, DIG Basti range Rakesh Shankar who was then SP Deoria, has also been released from his existing position. The UP police department has initiated a departmental action against the two senior police officials, Rohan P. Kanay and Rakesh Shankar.

The action comes hours after UP DGP OP Singh submitted a report to the state government earlier today.

On August 5, as many as 20 girls were rescued and a couple was arrested by the Deoria police after an inmate escaped and made a complaint against alleged ill-treatment being meted out to the inmates of the shelter home. More arrests were made later following the investigation. (ANI)
