Dissolution of Assembly is the best course of action: Governor Malik

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Wednesday night dissolved the state Assembly citing the “impossibility of forming a stable government by the coming together of political parties with opposing political ideologies,” reported The Indian Express.

Malik, expressing “serious doubts about the longevity of any such arrangement where there are competing claims of majority”, he said dissolution of the Assembly is “the best course of action… to provide stability and security to the state and hold elections at an appropriate time so that a government with a clear mandate is duly formed”.

The move came shortly after the Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) are engaged in serious parleys to form a coalition government in the state.

The 87-member state Assembly has 28 MLAs of the PDP, 26 of the BJP, 15 of the NC, 12 of Congress, 2 of People’s Conference and 4 independents.

The Governor’s rule was imposed ever since the BJP walks out of the alliance with the PDP that marked “a grand alliance of like-minded secular parties”.

The three parties (Congress, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC)) bury differences for the time being and came together to stymie the efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to support a third front for government formation in the state.

Confirming the developments to some reporters, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that talks were going on between the three parties to cobble an alliance that would keep the BJP out of power in the state.
