Donald Trump’s Sanctuary City Order ruled unconstitutional by US District Court

Washington: In a Major blow to the US President Trump’s Administration, the US District Court on Monday issued a permanent injunction blocking Trump’s executive order which aimed at stopping federal funding for the sanctuary cities.

Sanctuary city is a broad term that applies to jurisdictions that have policies in place designed to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement actions.

The ruling of the federal judge comes in the way of Hard-line policies of Trump on immigration which was one of his Poll promises.

The executive order was issued by Trump’s administration in January to crackdown on jurisdictions which do not act in accordance with requests of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for assistance with identifying and deporting illegal immigrants. The order for crackdown was issued against jurisdictions such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Reacting to the court order, Justice Department spokesman Devin O’Malley said that “The District Court exceeded its authority today when it barred the President from instructing his cabinet members to enforce existing law.”

Those fighting the executive order celebrated the judgement and “This is a victory for the American people and the rule of law,” San Francisco city attorney Dennis Herrera said in a statement that “This is a victory for the American people and the rule of law, and this executive order was unconstitutional before the ink on it was even dry.

“We live in a democracy. No one is above the law, including the president.”
