‘We don’t need ex-gratia’: Rohith’s family

Hyderabad: The family members of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit scholar who committed suicide in the University of Hyderabad, on Saturday refused to accept the ex-gratia amount and demanded arrest of those responsible for his suicide.

“We don`t need money, I refuse to take money, if you want you take that money and tell me the truth. We strongly demand that anybody who is involved in his death must be arrested or suspended,” said Raju, Rohith’s brother.

“We are thinking VC is in this because till now he did not come to meet us,” he added.

The Hyderabad Central University (HCU) had on Friday announced an ex-gratia of Rs eight lakh to the family of Rohith Vemula.

The professors are members of the University of Hyderabad SC/ST Teachers and Officers Forum, including professors and lecturers, resigned from their administrative positions in a bid to show solidarity with the protesting students over the suicide of Rohith Vemula.

Rohith and four others were suspended in December, and a month later Vemula hanged himself to death on the university campus.
