Dowry harassment drives two women to commit suicide

HYDERABAD: Two women committed suicide in separate incidents here, one by hanging herself while the other set herself ablaze, police said.

In the first incident, 33-year-old housewife Zarina Begum set herself ablaze by pouring kerosene oil over her body. She succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

According to police sources, the deceased depressed with the continuous harassment, took the drastic step.

Zarina was married to Qayyum and after her marriage, her husband and in-laws harassed her over dowry.

In the other incident, 26-year-old Swati, allegedly hung herself from the ceiling at her residence in Balanagar on Friday night.

Swati was married to Chandra Shaker two-and-a-half years ago, said Balanagar police.

She took the drastic step after a bitter tiff with her husband who allegedly been harassing her and demanding more dowry.

A case has been lodged in this regard and further investigations are going on police said.
