DRI seizes 3,314 Kgs of Gold at Vizag, Three Arrested

Vizag: Based on intelligence, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Vizag, intercepted two passengers traveling in Guwahati – Secunderabad Express on January 4 at Visakhapatnam Railway Station.

A press note of the DRI said here today that on examination, it was found that the passengers were carrying gold concealed inside packets of the cotton vest (banian) worn by them. Thee packets were specially made for the purpose of concealment of the contraband. The total weight of the smuggled gold was found to be 3314 grams. Inquiries revealed that the gold was smuggled to India from Myanmar and someone handed them over the smuggled gold for onward transfer to Secunderabad. The passengers admitted that the gold was smuggled into the country and they did not have any valid documents to prove the licit purchase/import of the said gold.

A total of 3314 grams of smuggled gold recovered from the passengers, valued at Rs.1.08 crore has been seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. Two passengers and a mastermind involved in smuggling of the gold have been arrested on January 8. Further investigation is in progress, the note added.
