EFA protest in Berlin against director Oleg Sentsov’s imprisonment

Washington: European Film Association is protesting at the Russian Embassy in Berlin against the imprisonment of Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, directors, producers and film industry activists are planning to join EFA on the 58thday of the hunger strike by the Ukrainian director.

The protest is being supported by the German Film Academy, National Academy of Arts and Amnesty International.

Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Russian military court on terrorism charges.

Irish producer Mike Downey, EFA deputy chair, told The Hollywood Reporter, “The massive publicity coup that Vladimir Putin has pulled off with the World Cup could be further enhanced by addressing the issue of the Ukrainian hostages and Sentsov.”

It is also notable that the hunger strike is coinciding with the football World Cup being held in Russia.

Sentsov has lost around 15 kilograms since going on the hunger strike revealed the filmmaker’s cousin Natalia Kaplan.
