Election Commission issues notice to makers of Modi’s biopic

Election Commission has issued a notice to the filmmakers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s biopic, saying that the film may have violated the Model Code of Conduct. Trailer of ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ starring Vivek Oberoi was released a few days ago.

As reported by the News Minute, on March 20, East Delhi Returning Officer K Mahesh had issued suo moto notices to the production house as well as music company of PM Narendra Modi. Two newspapers were also served notices for running the biopic’s ads.

The report quoted Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh as saying, “If any pre-certified political or surrogate advertisement is circulated, it is a violation of Model Code of Conduct. Whosoever has done it is given an opportunity to explain their stand.”

The filmmakers and other concerned parties were asked to respond by March 30. The film is slated for release on April 5.

Election Commission issued a notice to the filmmakers and others after 47 civil servants also urged the polling body to delay the biopic’s release till May 23. The civil servants had argued that the film releasing just a week before the polling commences on April 11 is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

Besides civil servants, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also said that the decision to release PM Narendra Modi just ahead of the General Elections in the country has a clear political motive.

Seeking postponement of the release of the film until the last phase of voting on May 19 is over, opposition parties, including the Congress, CPI-M and the CPI, had also approached the Election Commission. And claimed that it is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
