Hyderabad: The stark inequality in the Indian society could be tackled successfully by implementing the recommendations of Equal Opportunity Commission, said its author Padma Shree N R Madhava Menon on Thursday, December 7.
Delivering keynote address at the inaugural session of the two-day seminar on Vision of Maulana Azad and Nation Building Dr Menon said that the recommendations of the EOC were in line with the directives of the constitution.
The seminar is organised by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Chair of MANUU in collaboration with Civil Services Examination Coaching Academy, Equal Opportunity Cell and Training and Placement Cell.
Supporting the view presented by Dr Menon, Mr G. Sudhir, Head, Commission of Inquiry set up by Telangana in 2015, said that he too have recommended to the State government for the setting up of EOC to ameliorate the socio-economic conditions of the Muslims who form over 12 per cent of the population.
Dr Menon, considered to be a globally recognised legal educator, said, “The formation of the Commission does not specify that it that would look into the situation faced by the Muslim community. The recommendations of the commission, therefore, are for all economically and socially deprived sections of the country… We have submitted the report of the EOC to the government. In 2014 the government said that it would be implementing the recommendations of the commission soon. But the decision never saw the light of the day,” he said.
Prof. Kirit Parekh, former member of the Planning Commission, paid tributes to Maulana Azad and said that the government should ensure that the benefits of reservation policy in jobs was reaching the target groups, not only to the creamy layers among them.
Prof. Amitabh Kundu, Senior Fellow, Research and Information System for Developing Countries, said according to data available in public domain the situation of Muslims in education as well as jobs was equal to that of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. “Special steps have to be taken to bring them on par with the developed communities in the country,” he said.
Prof Abusaleh Sharif, Chair Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Chair at the university, in his introductory remarks, said that he found an economist in the personality of the Maulana as he had laid the foundation of such institutions that have been taking India forward since independence.
Prof. Saneem Fatima from Business Management Department, welcomed the guests and made a presentation on the progress of MANUU.
