First draft of Assam’s NRC: 1.4 cr names including Badruddin Ajmal missing from the list

Guwahati: The first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam which was revealed at midnight of Sunday contains 1.9 crore persons. However, 1.4 crore persons including Badruddin Ajmal missing from the list.

According to the report published in TOI, the first draft of NRC had many surprises. Rebel leader Paresh Baruah found his name in the draft whereas Lok Sabha MP and All India United Democratic Front Chief Badruddin Ajmal missing from the list. He represents Dhubri, bordering Bangladesh, in western Assam.

The names of five of Paresh Baruah also appeared in the list. Expressing happiness, his sister-in-law Renu said that her entire family is happy.

It may be mentioned that besides Badruddin Ajmal, his brother Sirajuddin, a Lok Sabha MP and two sons fail to find the name in the list.

Talking on this, Registrar General of India (RGI) Sailesh Kumar said, ” It contains 1.9 crore persons who have been verified till date. The rest of the names are under various stages of verification”.

Meanwhile, Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal talking to media persons said, ” As per hon’ble Supreme Court’s order, there will be two more drafts of the NRC and the names of all genuine citizen claimants whose names do not feature in the first publication will be included in it after verification of the pending documents”.

Other political persons whose names are missing are AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Quasimi and his family, BJP MLA from Hojai Shiladitya Dev, Congress MLA Nurul Huda.

Reacting to it, Nurul Huda said that 70% of the residents of Rupohihat are not included in the list.

It may be mentioned that earlier, Hojai Shiladitya Dev had triggered controversy by saying most of the Muslims in the State are from Bangladesh.
