First of its kind: Hyderabad to have children’s court in India

Hyderabad: First-of-its-kind in India, a children’s court to be set up in Hyderabad in a month, exclusively for cases and trials under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The children’s court will be set up outside a regular court and will work from the Bharosa Centre of the Hyderabad City Police, quoted Telangana Today.

“For the first time in India, a children’s court will be established outside the premises of a regular court. It will be established as per Supreme Court orders and guidelines mentioned in the POCSO Act-2012,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes & SIT), Swati Lakra .

In order to make child victims comfortable, a separate entrance would ensure that they don’t have to face suspect under any circumstance.

“Also, a one-way mirror will be set up so that the child is not exposed in any way to the suspect at the time of recording evidence. At the same time, it is being ensured that the suspect is in a position to hear the statement of the child and communicate with his advocate,” she said.

Another restroom will also be set up for victims, along with the rooms for judicial officers, prosecutors, defence advocates including a waiting place for public.
