New Delhi: Five women were arrested for allegedly posing as maids and committing thefts in houses in different areas of Delhi after winning the trust of owners, police said today.
All five women, who hail from Bhagalpur in Bihar, were arrested on November 25, they said.
A total of seven women have been arrested so far, the police said.
The police seized the stolen gold and diamond jewellery worth crores of rupees from them, they said.
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police was tasked to collect information and nab members of the gang involved in a spate of thefts and burglaries, the police said.
On November 25, the police team learnt that the members of the gang would be coming near the Ghazipur Bus Depot.
Subsequently, the women were nabbed, they said.
During investigation, the women told the police that they were roaming in posh colonies in the national capital and inquired about houses that required maids from the security guards, the police said.
“The women, who mostly worked in pairs, would win the trust of the house owners by showcasing their professionalism and efficiency within a week,” they said.
One of them would distract the victim’s family by asking them to meditate while her accomplice, who happened to be an expert in breaking locks of cupboards or drawers, would steal the jewellery and hide it under her shawl and flee, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) G Ram Gopal Naik said.
With the help of a CCTV footages, it was found that there were common faces involved in most of the incidents. Most of the women were wearing shawls and saris, he said.
The gang members stayed in Delhi-NCR for short periods and left for Bihar after amassing huge quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, Naik said.
The gang disposed off the stolen items with the help of jewellers in Bihar since they feared they would be arrested if they took the items to jewellers in Delhi, the DCP said.
