Washington: Former NBC News anchor and “Today Show” host Matt Lauer was fired from NBC on Wednesday after the network announced his termination citing an allegation of inappropriate sexual behavior with a colleague which dates back to Sochi Olympics in 2014.
NBC chairman Andrew Lack took the firm step stating it as “a clear violation of our company’s standards”. The termination memo was read on air by Matt’s co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
Though chairman did not reveal any specifics into on what the Matt is accused of but the NBC news reported it refers to a complaint filed by producer that he harassed her and also sent sexts to her while working at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. The inappropriate behavior is reported to have continued afterward.
The next following day Matt has reportedly apologized saying he was “truly sorry” in a statement which was read by his co-host Savannah on Thursday’s morning show.
His statement read as, “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions, To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.”
He added, “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.”
“Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace.”
It was only few hours of Lauer’s termination, Variety and The New York Times released their reports that had detailed other alleged incidents of sexual misconduct which was further confirmed by the NBC officials that two more accusers had come forward on Wednesday.
