Gauri Lankesh’s birthday anniversary on Jan 29: Who she was? Why she was killed?

Bengaluru: Gauri Lankesh, senior journalist and activist was the editor of the “Gauri Lankesh Patrike”, a tabloid. Today is her birthday anniversary.

She was a critic of right-wing Hindu extremists. She also campaigned for the rights of women and against discrimination based on caste for which she was awarded Anna Politkovskaya Award.

On 5th September 2017, she was shot dead by unknown assailants outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

The four CCTV cameras located at the residence had captured the entire incident. In the footage, it can be seen that 55-year-old journalist had returned home by car and was opening the gate when a person who was wearing helmet shot at her and ran away.

After the preliminary investigations, SIT had released three sketches of suspected killers and sought public help.

Later, Ex-IAS officer, S.M. Jamdar had suspected that Journalist, Gauri Lankesh and academic, M.M. Kalburgi were murdered as they supported the demand for separate religious status for the Lingayat-Veerashaiva community.

Mr. Jamdar also said that Gauri Lankesh published a 21-page edition supporting Lingayat-Veerashaiva community. Mr. Kalburgi had also supported the cause.

According to the report published in TOI, on Friday, Dy. Chief of SIT probing the case said that no arrest has been made in Gauri Lankesh murder case.

It is very surprising that despite CCTV footage and other clues, her assailant could not be traced out so far.
