Gay wedding video reportedly from Saudi Arabia sparks stir

RIYADH: Authorities in Makkah made the arrests after a video footage appeared to describe as a “gay wedding scene” has gone viral in the Gulf kingdom.

According to Saudi news website al-Marsd, the same-sex weddings reportedly took place sometime last week in Aradiyat, a governorate located near city of Makkah, the holiest site in Islam.

In the footage, two young men, dressed in traditional Saudi thobes was seen walking side by side while those surrounding the duo were seen spraying confetti at an outdoor venue.

However, the scene was interrupted as Makkah police raided the ceremony and detained everyone those participated in a ‘same-sex wedding’.

In a statement on Twitter, police wrote in Arabic: “The man said people attending the event were surprised when a few young men entered the place and tried to perform a ‘gay wedding scene.’ The police were told one of the men appeared to be a cross-dresser.”

According to a translation by News website Step Feed, one of the men in the ceremony was a ‘crossdresser’.

It went on: “After the crossdresser and other people involved in the incident were identified, they were all arrested and their case will now be referred to the prosecution.”

The Siasat Daily does not confirm the authenticity of the video footage however Saudi officials are not taking it lightly and opened an investigation into an alleged wedding ceremony.

Same-sex marriage remains illegal and homosexual activity is punishable by severe punishment – ranging from flogging, imprisonment,fines, torture and even to death in Saudi Arabia.
