Gorakhpur: 69 children die within 4 days at BRD Medical College, 19 in 24 hours

Gorakhpur: Despite the arrest of BRD Medical College Principal, a doctor and other staff two months ago, the number of children’s deaths in the hospital is on a rise since October 7.

Within past four days, 69 children have died, of which nineteen deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. According to the current Principal, P K Singh, 13 newborn babies died, and six others died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) at BRD Medical College.

“Most of these deaths are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to various reasons, such as pneumonia, septicemia, asphyxia, etc,” Singh said, reports The Indian Express.

Of 333 patients admitted to the hospital, 109 children are suffering from AES, Singh said. According to hospital’s records, 12 children died on October 7, 20 on October 8, 18 died on October 9, and 19 deaths were reported on October 10.

When questioned about these deaths, Singh said: “Most of these deaths are in NICU due to various medical reasons, and the rest are due to AES.”

BRD Medical College had made headlines in August after the scores of children died in the hospital, reportedly due to the lack of oxygen. The UP government denied any shortage, but an action was taken against the principal and other staff for their negligence.
