Government-run creches under scanner

New Delhi: The government is conducting inspections to ascertain if there are creches under the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) that exist only on paper.

“Physical inspection of creches operated by (ICCW) is being carried out by the Ministry to assess if there are any non-existent creches,” Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.

The grant given to ICCW is also being scrutinised by the Director General of Audit, she said.

According to ICCW’s website, it runs 5,303 creches across 449 districts and 31 states and Union Territories in the country.

Last month, the Delhi High Court had ordered an inquiry into the functionaing of ICCW to find out if the Union government funds recieved by it were being siphoned off.
