Govt. has no powers to seal wakf records, Advocate General admits in Hyderabad HC

Hyderabad: Advocate General of Govt. of Telangana State admitted in the Hyderabad High Court that Govt. has no powers under the wakf act to seal wakf records and its offices but this step was taken with good intentions in order to protect wakf properties since it is a matter pertaining to wider public interest.
The division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili was hearing a PIL petition. The judges told the Govt. advocate that though the intention of the Govt. is good, but it should follow the established system.
The Advocate General further informed that only record room was sealed and a team of 6 officials has been constituted to organize wakf record properly. Govt. issued a memo on 14th November for not creating any hindrance in the routine functioning of the Wakf Board. He also told that very soon, Govt. would formulate a plan to improve the functioning of Wakf Board.
It may be mentioned that a PIL was filed in Hyderabad High Court contending that Govt. has no powers under the wakf act either to seal Wakf Board Office or its records.
The next hearing of the case is scheduled for Tuesday.
