HC directs TS, AP to rein in errant qazis

Hyderabad: Justice S V Bhatt of the Hyderabad High Court has issued notices to the Union government as well Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states, to clear their stand on marriage of poor Muslim girls with aged Arab nationals. He directed them to explain the steps taken by them to prevent the exploitation of poor Muslim girls by October 30.

He also stressed the need to bring in new laws to curb the exploitation of poor Muslim girls at the hands of foreign nationals and also self-serving qazis.

The judge was dealing with a petition by Shaikh Chand Basha of Prakasam district challenging AP’s GOs that appointed two qazis for various mandals in Prakasam district in which the petitioner’s counsel S A Razzak told the court that there was no clear policy that governs the functioning of qazis.

The hearing has been posted to October 30.
