Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg favours new Oscars category

Washington: In the wake of the controversy surrounding Oscars new category ‘Achievement in popular film’, Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg vouched for the newly-introduced award.

Katzenberg said that he is too insignificant to comment any further on this topic, saying that “it is way above his pay grade”, reports Variety.

Earlier, Academy Awards President John Bailey informed that from next year onwards, the new ‘Achievement in popular film’ category will be added to the awards show.

The announcement of the new category, which was met with criticism is aimed to bring such films to the forefront, which often go unnoticed.

Earlier this month, ‘Transformers’ star Mark Wahlberg voiced his support for the category. He asserted that had such a category existed in the past, he would have easily won one.

Apart from the new category, the Oscar telecast will be shortened to three hours.

Oscars also known as the Academy Awards, are a set of 24 awards for artistic merit in the American film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
