Hyderabad: After Metro Rail, city gets “electric buses”

Hyderabad: In a first of its kind initiative, the Telangana Government on September 5 launched electric buses for first and last mile connectivity. Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration Department Arvind Kumar, along with Special Chief Secretary Energy Ajay Mishra flagged off electric buses at a function in the secretariat.

Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Mishra congratulated the Municipal Administration and Transport departments for launching electric buses. The launch of electric vehicles is part of the many initiatives taken by the Municipal Administration department, he added. Arvind Kumar said some 100 buses have been sanctioned of which initially 40 electric buses would be introduced in the city for increasing connectivity to the airport. Another 60 buses will be introduced shortly, he added.

He also said 21 seater electrical buses will be introduced by Metro Rail and E-Swachh Autos in GHMC and Municipalities to reduce pollution levels. “General public can now travel to airport in a zero emission and noiseless electric buses. These buses are part of contract for deployment of 40 electric buses which TSRTC awarded to Olectra. Passengers traveling to Airport would now be able to travel in an eco-friendly and noiseless comfortable vehicle. These Electric Buses are manufactured in India by Olectra Greentech (Formerly Goldstone Infratech) in a strategic tie-up with BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd – world’s largest electric vehicle company.

It may be mentioned that last year, Metro Rail was started in Hyderabad.
