Hyderabad airport launches Face Recognition system

Hyderabad: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad which had initiated the Face Recognition (FR ) system on trial basis for passengers for entry into the airport has decided to extend the ongoing trials till July 31.

The Trials are being carried out under Centre’s Digi Yatra program starting from July 1 and would now continue till July 31 against the earlier slated date of July 3.

Over 180 passengers enrolled voluntarily for the trials at the airport under the DigiYatra program. The registration is available from 8 am to 8 pm for passengers who would like a new digital experience and is completely voluntary.

Passengers would be automatically processed based on facial recognition system at checkpoints such as entry point check, an entry into Security Check, Aircraft BGoarding, additionally this would also facilitate self bag drop and check-in using facial recognition to identify pax and data recall. Digi Yatra will facilitate paperless travel and avoid identity check at multiple points according to officials.

For FR enrollment one can visit any of the FR Registration counters at the airport with a valid Government ID card, contact details and get his or her face captured by the camera.

An exclusive E-gate is available at the Departure Gate No. 3 where the enrolled passenger can get his or her boarding card scanned, face the FR camera which matches and verifies the credentials along with the itinerary details. On successful verification, the passenger gets checked in and the e-gate opens all this at a split of a second. Passengers must, however, complete their check-in process before accessing the FR e-gate

Currently, the trials are being offered to passengers who travel with hand baggage and are bound for the select cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Vijayawada.

Since this is a trial phase, CISF personnel will still physically verify the travel documents and ID details of the registered passenger at the departure gate.

The checked-in passenger can then proceed to a dedicated FR channel for security check, where the FR camera will verify the credentials, followed by mandatory frisking by CISF personnel. After, CISF approval, the passenger can head for boarding.
