Hyderabad: around 80 trees fall in Zoo during Saturday rain; mar visitors’ fun

Hyderabad: Around 80 trees fell in the zoo during Saturday rain, as a result, the fun was spoiled for around 9,000 visitors who thronged the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad, on Sunday. They were restricted from entering the children’s corner in the zoo, as the area had a high intensity of tree fall and the tree debris is still being cleared.

As reported by Deccan Chronicle, while 80 trees fell in the Zoo alone, another 73 trees fell in different parts of the city due to the rains on Saturday. A total of 153 trees were completely uprooted in the city.

Senior GHMC officials in the disaster management team revealed that trees were uprooted in Malakpet, Gowliguda, Kalapather, Machlikaman, Noor Khan Bazaar, Madhapur, Kavadiguda, Tolichowki, Bahadurpura and other areas.

They attributed the uprooting of trees to the cementing of footpaths where tree roots do not get the chance to spread deep and get uprooted by strong winds.

More than 50 years old like neem, tamarind, babul and cassia were uprooted in the thunderstorm at the Zoo Park. The power lines were also damaged due to the falling of trees. Fortunately, animals remain unhurt as all of them were taken into their night enclosures.

According to Zoo officials, some places like the children’s areas were restricted keeping in view the safety of visitors, as the huge branches fell all over the place and labourers were still clearing the debris.
