Hyderabad: Dowry harassment claims another life

Hyderabad: Evil practices such as Dowry harassment still exist in our conservative Indian society which does not seem to change at least until the next generation.

A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in city limits due to additional dowry harassment by her inlaws, TT reports.

According to police, the incident occurred in KPHB colony in Hyderabad where the victim identified as Medishetty Dhanalaxmi (25), got married to D Krishna Rao – a record assistant at the Deputy Inspector of school in Punjagutta in April last year.

The victim’s family members had then reportedly paid Rs 10 lakh cash, an acre of land parcel and 40 tolas of gold ornaments at the time of marriage as gift to the couple.

“Differences cropped up between the couple after Rao did not give any money for running the household expenses. The relatives of Dhanalaxmi complained that Rao used to come home in an inebriated state and harass her physically and mentally demanding more money from her parents,” said KPHB Inspector S Lakshminarayana.

After efforts made by elders from both the families this year after Dhanalaxmi went to her parents house in West Godavari, “Krishna Rao assured to look after his wife and brought her back to the city,” said a family member.

But the victim, unable to take pressure from her husband decided to take the extreme step on Saturday evening after she sent a text message to her family members giving details of the harassment and hanged herself from the ceiling fan with a saree.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s family, the police registered a case against Krishna and other family members. The body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital mortuary.

A post mortem examination was done on Sunday and handed over the family.
