Hyderabad: Farmer arrested for growing ganja in field

Hyderabad: The Medchal excise police arrested a farmer who was cultivating Ganja at his farm for consumption, Acting on a tip-off, the excise officials went to the farm and nabbed him on Saturday.

The accused has been identified as A. Veera Swamy, 54. According to the police, Ganja weighing 700 gm have been recovered by the excise cops have. Usually, anyone who wants cultivate Ganja for medical purposes has to get permission from the Narcotic Control Bureau.

“A person from the village advised the accused to consume ganja for improving his health. If a person is found cultivating ganja the accused can be imprisoned for 10 years and fined Rs 1 lakh,” Inspector of Medchal Excise police station D. Jagan Mohan Reddy said.

The police have registered a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway.
