Hyderabad: Old city based NRI booked for rape, arrested at RGI Airport

Hyderabad: A Dubai based NRI was arrested at RGI Airport today by Immigration sleuths who handed him over to Malkajgiri Police over a cheating complaint against him.

The 30-year-old NRI was arrested for cheating the woman after promising to marry her, TOI reported.

The 26 year-old victim had previously filed a rape case against the accused in February after which a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued.

The accused identified as Safdar Abbas Zaidi, is a software professional from Darulshifa in the Old City and was reportedly in a live-in relationship with the victim for the past three years who was his colleague.

Police said the victim and the accused both worked together in a software firm in Somajiguda and later went to Dubai for work in 2014.

The victim said she followed him in 2014 and the duo’s families also agreed to their marriage for which the victim even converted to Islam.

“However, due to certain restrictions imposed by Zaidi on the victim, she returned to India early in 2018. When Zaidi refused to marry her, she lodged a complaint with us and a case was registered under sections 376 (rape), 417 and 420 (cheating) of the IPC,” Malkajgiri police inspector A Manmohan said.

The Police said since the accused was in Dubai when the complaint was registered the police has issued a LOC against him.

“We produced him before the court and he was sent in judicial remand,” the inspector said.
