Hyderabadi youth stranded in Jeddah, sounds alarm bells about fake agencies

Hyderabad: An MBA graduate from Hyderabad was allegedly cheated by an agent. He is stranded in Jeddah after going to Saudi Arabia in search of employment.

28-year-old, Ponnaboyina Swamy, resident of Ramnagar, was recently released from a jail. According to Swamy a recruiting agency in Hyderabad, promised him a management job, but after reaching the country employed him as domestic helper. He had paid Rs 1 lakh to the agent.

Swamy told that when he refused to work as domestic helper his employer told him that he had spent SR 6,000 (nearly Rs 1 lakh) on recruiting him hence asked him to work till the amount is paid back. Only then he would be sent back to India.

After several failed attempts Swamy finally managed to escape and reached capital Riyadh to contact Indian Embassy. However the angry employer lodged a fake theft complaint against Swamy.

Swamy spent five months in jail and was released after paying SR 10,000 as compensation for the uncommitted crime. According to him his father sold ancestral property for securing his release.

Despite being released on January 7, Swamy could not return to India as his name has not been cleared by authorities to enable travel.
