IIT-Delhi student attempts suicide

New Delhi: A 19-year-old IIT-Delhi student, who was in depression as he didn’t want to study engineering, allegedly attempted suicide this morning by jumping off the terrace of a hostel building.

Nitish Kumar Purthi, a first year Engineering-Physics student, is admitted at AIIMS Trauma Centre, said a senior police officer.

He jumped from the fourth floor of Vindyachal hostel around 4 AM today and has suffered fracture in his legs, the officer said.

“He was in depression as he didn’t want to study engineering. His roommate was taking him downstairs.

“When his roommate went to call a security guard for assistance, the student climbed the terrace on the fourth floor and jumped off the building,” said the officer.

Nitish had taken admission in the prestigious institution about a year back. He had shifted from his residence in Ranchi last year.

His roommate Abhinandan told police that Nitish seemed normal before the incident.

Nitish’s family members have arrived and police will be talking to them to ascertain the reason for Nitish attempting such a step. Nitish will also be spoken to tomorrow.
