HYDERABAD: The newly-opened Swedish home furnishings retailer IKEA came in for embarrassment after a customer allegedly found a caterpillar in the vegetable biryani that was served to him.
A customer named Abeed Mohammad, who had visited the store on Friday, tweeted about the incident tagging the city’s municipal authorities that was widely shared on social media.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued a notice to the IKEA restaurant manager as well as to the veg biryani vendor, Haldiram at Nagpur which it procures it procures prepared veg biryani. It also levied a fine of Rs 11,500 on the firm for flouting norms.
Hotel inspection was done on directions given by GHMC higher authorities and as admitted by IKEA , caterpillar was handed over to GHMC hotel inspection team. Food samples were taken by food controller for examination as a per the procedure. pic.twitter.com/SfkuXUoHSw

The Ikea management has tendered an apology. IKEA spokesperson was quoted by The News Minutes as saying, “We apologize for the unfortunate experience. We are investigating the matter and will take immediate corrective action. At IKEA, we have the strictest guidelines when it comes to food quality as customer health and safety are something we care about deeply.”
