Independence Day: Hyderabad’s “Spanish Mosque” invites all

Hyderabad: In order to promote communal harmony, on Independence Day, Jama Masjid Aiwan-e-Begumpet will be open for all. The masjid has invited persons belonging to all religions to visit the mosque.

According to the report published in India Today, people belonging to all religions can visit the mosque between 10 am and 7 p.m. on 15th August.

It may be mentioned that the mosque is famously known as the ‘Spanish Mosque’ due to its architecture. It was built in 1906. The mosque is also known for its architectural style. It has both Moorish and Turkish features. Currently, the mosque is maintained by Paigahs, an aristocratic family.

MA Faiz Khan, one of the members of the Paigah family and “Mutavalli” said that the motive behind ‘Visit My Mosque’ program is to promote national integrity and communal harmony.

It may be mentioned that the construction of the mosque was started by Paigah noble Sir Viqar-ul Umera. However, it was completed by his successor.

Giving the details of the program, Mr. Khan said that the aim of it is to make people aware about the activities which actually take place in the masjid. During the session, people can also ask questions.

Meanwhile, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Telangana, co-convenor P Anuradha Reddy described the mosque as a fascinating architectural gem of the city.
