Indian farms give strongest antibiotics to chickens, claims study

New Delhi: A study claimed that Indian farms are giving strongest antibiotics to chickens.

According to the report published in The Guardians, every year, hundreds of tons of world’s strongest antibiotics are used for healthy growth of chickens.

It may be mentioned that with the increase in the usage of such last resort antibiotics may result in resistance to strong antibiotics. It may also result in spreading of pathogens.

This practice is common in many developing counties, The Guardian reported.

It is also reported that a study conducted by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism found that hundreds of tonnes of colistin are used to treat animals. Such activities lead to increase in antibiotic resistance among animals across the world.

It may be noted that Colistin is the last lines of defence against serious diseases. In the absence of this drug, many diseases which can be cured now, cannot be cured later.
