Indonesia: Unmarried couple publicly whipped for flirting

Banda Aceh: An unmarried couple was publicly whipped for dating and violating Islamic laws. According to sources a woman and a man were whipped in Banda Aceh. A man in mask whipped the couple in public on stage.

Aceh region in Indonesia implements the system of Shariah law and has done so since 2003 when it was granted special autonomy. According to the law, a non-mahram couple cannot be intimate without getting married to each other.

In 2016 an unmarried couple was whipped publicly. Similarly, in December 2015 a university student and her friend were caned publicly for spending time alone. This year in March, 18 people including an unmarried couple were whipped publicly.
