Indore adjudged No 1 cleanest city, AP, TS bag seven Swachh awards

Hyderabad: President Ram Nath Kovind presented Swachh Survekshan Awards of 2019, an initiative of the Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, at a function held in Vignan Bhavan here today. While Indore in Madhya Pradesh State emerged as India’s cleanest city No 1, the two Telugu States bagged seven awards i.e. Vijayawada, Tirupati, Sullurupeta and Kavali in Andhra Pradesh and Siddipet, Sircilla and Boduppal in the youngest Telangana State.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said the country India has made remarkable progress towards achieving the goals of rural and urban sanitation. “Today, a city or a village is identified by its emphasis on cleanliness. This is an important change. By winning the first prize in all the four surveys so far, Indore has set an example for other urban centers”, the President said.

The President said cleanliness should be integral to the behaviour of every citizen to make it effective and sustainable. “Many people pay attention to personal hygiene but remain apathetic to public and community cleanliness. Change in this mentality was important for achieving the goals of Swachh Bharat”, he said and exhorted the educational institutions to include cleanliness in their curriculum and spread awareness about the importance of sanitation.

While Indore city emerged as the No. 1 cleanest city for third consecutive year, Bhopal, capital city of Madhya Pradesh, was adjudged as one of the cleanest cities. It may be mentioned here that the Union government conducted a survey in 4,237 cities from January 4 to 31 to identify clean cities in the country.
