Internships made compulsory for engineering students – Here’re the details

New Delhi: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) made internships compulsory for the students belonging to engineering courses. It also fixed the duration for the internship. For engineering students, it is 600-700 hours whereas, for diploma students, it is 450-500 hours.

According to the report published in The New Indian Express, degree and diploma students should obtain 14-20 and 10-14 credits respectively.

It may be mentioned that 1 credit is equal to 40-45 hours of internship.

This step will ensure that students get practical experience and opportunity to learn real-time technical and managerial skills.

There must be a training and Placement Cell (T&P Cell) in all AICTE-approved institutions. For the functioning of the cell, one per cent of the institution’s budget should be allotted to the cell. Institutions are also required to arrange internships for students.

Another concept of “Activity Points” are introduced. Now, students have to earn this points during their course. Students belonging to engineering degree should earn 100 “Activity Points” whereas students of diploma course should earn 75 points.

AICTE also launched websites for internships and placements.

Recently, considering the rising number of unemployed engineering graduates, AICTE had taken an appropriate decision. It made GATE compulsory for all the Engineering students across the country to get an engineering degree. This decision is likely to be implemented from the academic year 2019-20, The New Indian Express reported.
