iOS 12, the next major software update for iPhone and iPad is focused on improving the overall experience and performance, Apple said its iOS 12 will be released on September 17th.
Here are some of the best iOS 12 features:
- Performance
In particular, iOS 12 is focused on doubling down on performance. Apple delivered an OS that’s faster and more responsive across all iOS devices. The focus has mainly been on optimizing the system when it’s under load, with load speeds up to two times faster for sheet display and app launches.
- FaceTime
Group FaceTime allows you to chat with up to 32 people simultaneously. Since it’s now integrated into iMessage, you can easily set up a group FaceTime call through the iMessage group chat window. You also have the option to add fun effects like stickers and Memoji while on the FaceTime call.
- Messages
The App Strip in Messages has been redesigned so that it takes up less space as you type. The Messages app also has a Memoji Maker feature that allows you to customize your own Animoji. I will likely use this feature to create an avatar that resembles my appearance.
- Screen Time
The new Screen Time app provides a better understanding of how much time you are using apps, browsing the Internet and performing other tasks on a device.
- Notification Controls
Rather than seeing a long list of notifications, iOS 12 now groups them for you — not just by the app but also by topic and thread. You can tap in and look at a particular notification and then delete an entire thread with a single swipe.
You can also tune your notifications and decide whether you want a particular app to send you ones in the future or if you want it to bypass the lock screen. Siri even suggests which notifications you should turn off depending on the apps you don’t use often.
- Augmented Reality, ARKit 2
iOS 12 brings along a new version. ARKit 2.0 delivers improved face tracking, realistic rendering, and support for 3D object detection. There’s also support for shared experiences with multi-user augmented reality — you’ll be able to play AR games against other users in the same virtual environment, ARKit 2 includes improved face tracking, 3D object detection and realistic rendering.
- Measure App
Apple also created an app called Measure using its augmented reality technology. With the Measure app, you can easily get direct measurements of any objects around you. By tapping the object and dragging out a line, it will display a measurement right on your screen. You can also extend the measurements by tapping along the edges and dragging down. You also have the ability to tap on an object like a photo and have the app automatically detect the measurements, providing you with each dimension.
- Camera
Portrait mode photos have been improved as there is a new mask that is generated when a person is detected and separates the person from the scene. This works very well when you want to take bokeh-style photos.
- Siri
Siri gets a new feature called Shortcuts. These are (potentially multi-step) voice-triggered actions tailored to individual apps.
Any app can add Shortcuts. It just displays an ‘Add to Siri’ icon, and this allows you to create a voice shortcut for a specific feature of that app. Examples include “Help me relax” triggering a meditation app, and “Order my usual groceries”.
Siri in iOS 12 will contextually suggest shortcuts in the lock screen: if you order a coffee every morning, it will suggest triggering an action in the Starbucks app, say. Or it will suggest “Turn on Do Not Disturb” when you’re at a cinema, or remind you to call your grandmother on her birthday.
