Jaipur by-election: Congress defeated BJP with heavy votes

JAIPUR: The Congress on Friday declared victorious in the by-elections of Ward 76 of Municipal Corporation of Jaipur.

Congress’s Ikramuddin won the bye-elections by defeating BJP’s Ashok Agrawal by a huge margin of 5191 votes.

It should be noted that Jaipur Municipal Corporation ward 76 seat fell vacant after the death of the senior councilor Ghulam Nabi on April 23, who was a long-time councilor in Jaipur Municipal Corporation.

When JMC was formed in 1970, Nabi was elected as councillor for the first time and since then he had been a councilor and never tasted defeat in municipal election.

Counting of votes began at 8:00 am on Friday of October 6 at Maharani’s School, Banipark in the presence of returning officer Ashish Kumar.

In the first round, the Congress candidate got 2609 votes, 3186 in the second and 1736 votes in the third round, while the BJP candidate got 396, 1081 and 863 votes respectively.

It was BJP’s attempt to capture Ward 76 seat and it tried its best to win. However, in the counting of votes, BJP’s candidate remained behind the Congress candidate in every round.

The voting for the by-election was held peacefully on Wednesday.
