Even though over 2 years have passed since a sedition case was lodged against Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students over an event in which “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell is yet to file a charge sheet.
As per the section 173 of CrPC, Delhi Police generally files a charge sheet within 90 days of an arrest. However, it has been over 900 days since the police arrested three students of Jawaharlal Nehru University and filed an FIR for sedition but the case is yet to go on trial since the police have not filed a charge sheet.
On February 9, 2016, three students of the university, including the then students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, were arrested. They, however, were granted bail soon after. The others named in the FIR in the case were Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.
The incident in 2016 had caused a political storm after the police filed an FIR against the JNU students and others alleging that anti-national slogans were raised at an event organized on the campus.
However, its a quite surprising for a police force that has been confident about its case right from the beginning, no one is willing to say when the charge sheet will be filed.
The police had questioned 31 JNU students in connection with the case.
