John Mellencamp to receive Woody Guthrie Prize

Washington: American musician and singer-songwriter John Mellencamp will be awarded the fifth Woody Guthrie Prize.

The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, informed that Mellencamp will be presented with the award during a ceremony on August 30 this year, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

The annual prize is given to an artist, who best exemplifies legendary American singer Woody Guthrie, whose songs have inspired several generations both politically and musically.

Mellencamp is known for his catchy, populist brand of heartland rock, which emphasises traditional instrumentation.

The musician was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008, and on June 14, 2018, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
