Kanimozhi urges Swaraj to bring back 21 fishermen stranded in Iran

New Delhi: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi on Thursday met External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj and urged to bring back 21 Indian fishermen who have been stranded in Iran.

Meanwhile, Swaraj has given an assurance that immediate action will be taken on this issue.

Earlier in the day, Kanimozhi had also written a letter to EAM stating, “This is to bring to your notice about the predicament of 21 Indian citizens who are working as fishermen in Iran. All of them hailing from three southern districts of Tamil Nadu, namely Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli has been working in Iran for the past six months”.

“I had learnt that they (fishermen) are being abused, expelled from their quarters and made to stay in inhuman conditions without bring provide with any salary for their work. Their employer also had not given them back their passport and identify cards,” the letter added.

Kanimozhi also requested Swaraj to kindly direct the new office to bring these fishermen back to India safely at the earliest. (ANI)
