Kashmir: Leech therapy organised on Navroz, exclusive pictures

Srinagar: March 21 is celebrated as Navroz in many parts of the world to mark the first days of Spring Season, similarly, Kashmir also celebrates the Navroz as the first day of Spring Season.

Besides planting new tree saplings, people throng the practitioners of Leech Therapy, it is believed that Leech therapy is more effective on the days of Navroz than other days.

Leeches are effective at increasing blood circulation and breaking up blood clots. It can also be used to treat circulatory disorders and cardiovascular disease.

The European medicinal leech, Hirudo Medicinalis, is one of the several species of leeches used for medicinal therapy. The largest number of gathering can be seen in Hazratbal area of Srinagar City, where people across the Kashmir Valley comes for Leech Therapy.

“I have been in this trade from last 35 years and I believe, Leech therapy is more effective on Navroz day, said Wali Mohammad”. The particular species of leech used is imported from Uttar Pradesh to Kashmir and it costs a patient Rs. 50/- per therapy, he added.
