Kerala police investigate death of Ishrat Jahan case petitioner Gopinath Pillai

Kochi: The Kerala police have initiated an investigation into the accidental death of Gopinath Pillai, father of Pranesh Pillai. He died in a car accident in Kerala’s Alappuzha district on Friday. Gopinath Pillai was one of the petitioners in 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

Seventy-eight-year-old Pillai met with the accident while on his way to Kochi for medical treatment. The police have seized three vehicles involved in the accident, they said. The investigation is being done to ascertain the possibility of any foul play. However, it has so far revealed it was an accident.

Pillai’s younger brother, who was driving the car said the family was not suspecting any foul play. A case under 304A – causing death by negligence – has been filed, police said, a leading News Agency said.

Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh was among the four alleged terrorists who were shot dead on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004. 19-year-old college girl Ishrat Jahan from Mumbra in Maharashtra, Zeeshan Johar and Amzad Rana were among others to be killed.

The police had called them affiliates of Lashkar-e-Taiba, who allegedly planned to kill the then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
