Kolkata explosion: Municipality Chairman claims attack was to target him

Kolkata: The recent Kolkata explosion has killed 5 people, injuring a woman and a child in the explosion was earlier suspected to be a gas cylinder blast but investigating officers are of a different opinion, now that has a probe into the explosion has begun.

The explosion took in front of a multi-story building in the Nagerbazar area in Kolkata’s northern suburbs on Tuesday, outside a fruit shop on the ground floor of the building in the congested Kazipara area, News18 reported.

The police said a forensic’s team and sniffer dogs have been already sent to the spot to ascertain the nature of the explosion.

“Initially, we thought it was a gas cylinder blast. But it is not so. We are trying to find out the details. Forensic experts, along with the CID bomb disposal squad, are examining the area,” a senior officer of Barrackpore City Police Commissionerate said.

While the building also houses the office of South Dum Dum Municipality Chairman Panchu Roy, he is reported to have claimed that the explosion was to target him.

He claimed that the parties currently attacking the ruling TMC party in Bengal were behind the attack.

“It was a pre-planned blast… They had planned to kill me and other TMC workers, as it would create panic and help them gain foothold in the area,” he told PTI.
