Legendary Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib remembered on his 150th death anniversary

Legendary Urdu and Persian poet Mirza Ghalib was born on 27 December 1797. His name was Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan. Ghalib, the last great poet of the Mughal Era, is considered to be one of the most famous and influential poets of the Urdu and Persian languages. Mirza Ghalib was born in Kala Mahal, Agra into a family descended from Aibak Turks. Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II bestowed upon Mirza Ghalib the title of “Dabir-ul-Mulk” and “Najm-ud-daula.”

The powerful, eloquent and erudite poet who investigated and captured life’s experiences and occurrences with capering humour in his enigmatic ghazals died on February 15, 1869. His name is synonymous with Urdu poetry.

Even though Ghalib was never fully appreciated in his own lifetime, today, his verses are not only recited in Urdu but have now transcended borders and languages.
