Madrassa Cleric found guilty of ‘rape’, Nikaah with minor stands ‘invalid’

Kanpur: A Muslim cleric was sent to jail after he was found married to a minor where the nikaah stands invalid and illegal in Kanpur this Sunday.

The incident occurred in Kanpur’s Naubasta area where the SSP Anant Dev who visited the accused interrogated the cleric Moulana Javed who is accused of raping his student at a madrasa at Awas Vikas Hanspuram.

The medical report of the victim has confirmed rape. The police have seized the clothes of the accused for forensic investigation.

Speaking on the case, SSP Anant Dev said the accused would also be charged under National Security Act (NSA) and a charge sheet will be filed soon to fast track the case.

The police said the accused had picked the student from her home on the pretext of filling her scholarship form and took her to the seminary and raped her.

The incident has caused scare among other students of the Madrasa.

The police also stated the accused had earlier claimed to had carried out Nikaah with the victim, but since the victim was a minor born in 2004 the nikaah if at all it did place is invalid and illegal which amounts to an act of rape.

Meanwhile, State Women Commission member Poonam Kapoor met SP (South) Ravina Tyagi and sought a report in the case.
