Man taken off plane, arrested after Snapchat photo caused panic

A passenger named Yogvedanta Poddar who was flying on a Jet Airways flight was arrested at Kolkata airport after he was seen sending a photo on Snapchat of a masked man with a threatening comment that frightened the crew and other flyers.

The flight 9W 472 was taxiing on the runway which was going to Mumbai, it was scheduled for a take-off at 8:15 am but a passenger saw the man posting the photo with the words “terrorist, destroy”.

The frightened passenger then informed one of the flight attendants, who rushed to the cockpit and alerted the pilots about this. An airport official said, “The pilot reported the matter to the ATC (air traffic controller).”

The plane cancelled the take-off and returned to the parking bay at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Central Industrial Security Force arrested the passenger and handed him to the police for questioning. He is a resident of Salt Lake in northeast Kolkata. The police said he was flying to Mumbai for a job interview.

His family has been called to the police station. The man’s father reportedly said his son was simply “fooling around” with his friends.

The police said they have been on high alert today as the country remembers the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and they are now looking at his antecedents to determine if he was a threat.
